Fifteen years of conversations with writers
On September 14, 2011, I released the first episode of Otherppl. I had no idea then that I would still be doing the show fifteen years later, or that it would eventually grow into an archive of more than a thousand conversations with writers.
Over the years, the podcast has given me the chance to talk with authors at every stage of their careers about much more than books: ambition, failure, money, family, rejection, doubt, discipline, death, parenthood, sobriety, publishing, and the strange work of trying to make a creative life. The literary world has changed enormously since 2011. So has podcasting. But the basic idea behind Otherppl has remained the same: sit down with a writer, take the conversation seriously, and see where it goes.
To mark the fifteenth anniversary, I went back through the archive and chose fifteen conversations that have stayed with me. They aren’t necessarily the biggest names or the “best” episodes. They’re simply fifteen conversations that, for one reason or another, feel representative of what the show has been trying to do all these years.
I’m grateful to every writer who has joined me, and to everyone who has listened. Thank you so much.
